Two Gujarati fonts, Gopika and Gopika Two, are available for free download. Font design is ancient art originating around the year 200 AD in China where mostly ideographic script was used. Devanagari Script, an alphabetical script was created by Brahmi (Indus Valley Civilization) around 600 BC and gradually became popular in India. The origin of Hindi can be traced to Sanskrit which is closely related to Devanagari script in the early centuries AD. Fonts were designed with a specific purpose in mind such as making a particular text easier to read or aesthetically pleasing when using a computer screen or printing on paper. In order to achieve this, a characteristic of a given typeface is created as a design element. In this case, the characteristic that was adopted is the shape of Gujarati characters which is normally written from left to right with or without space between words and sentences they make. For an alphabetical script like Devanagari, there is a need to maintain a uniformity in form especially for text which would be read from left to right. This process is known as Kerning. In Gujarati the word 'Kern' refers to filling in of space between two letters. This way one can identify the letters easily even when they are placed together in a group. As opposed to English, Gujarati script does not have any capital or lower case letter. Two Gujarati fonts are available for free download.
